Paper test with color head
David Mark  8:07 13 Dec 02
After years of printing with a condenser enlarger, I recently acquired a Saunders with a Dichro color head. The insert literature for my paper of choice, Ilford MG IV FB, gives alternate sets of color head settings for the various paper grades. One set involves using only one color, yellow or magenta. The other set combines the two colors for most paper grades. My guess is that the two color combined settings yield something approximating speed matched paper grades based on a Zone VI.

My question is this: can I do my paper test with the two-color-combined settings? I would have assumed that I could, except that I notice paper tests published in the DMax Newsletter all seem to have been done with one-color-at-a-time settings. See, e.g., Vol. 5, No. 1.

I am interested in the two-color settings only if they are, in fact, approximately speed matched. Also, I do not mind the longer base exposure times that the two-color settings probably entail. I prefer a base exposure time of around thirty seconds, as it makes dodging easier.
