I'd be inclined to leave it alone, at least until experience had taught me that some extra compensation was necessary. I think this compensation is so uncertain and unpredictable that there's danger of making the situation worse by random adjustments.
I'd say try several flare adjustment values on a sunset scene and compare the print results; probably one of them will appear to be better than the others. But I don't think there's any guarantee that all sunsets will produce the same flare and given the other variables (all uncontrolled) i doubt that precise compensation is possible.
