The Heiland densitometer is very good, I have one and has served me for years very well. I have not problems recommending it.
IMO you do need a densitometer, I have not read the Anchell book but the eye is capable of separating very small values. We use it a lot in field chemistry to tell the differences in color strenght to determine concentrations etc. Besides, why bother to learn the BTZS if you are going to half ass it.... no?...
