Skip the mask; I added it to Kodak Step Tablets (only about an inch wide) to simulate the average density of a real negative. This in an effort to exhaust the developer at a realistic rate. Your 4x5 step tablet substitutes nicely for a pictorial negative so you're good to go without the mask.
