I would agree. Having done a fair amount if digital dabbling I can tell you that it is a bit of a black art. Scanners and scanner software can do all sorts of things behind your back to compress or stretch an image's luminance. Scanners don't have an ES range but instead usually try and stretch the histogram to fill the full digital spectrum, and they don't always do this correctly either which is what leads to digital clipping. It is a whole new ballgame when it comes to scanners.
