USA trip

Well I have just had a most enjoyable trip to the mid to northern Californian areas. I arranged my film to be sent ahead of me and had developer sent as well. I arrange for 4 packets of D76 and decided to use distilled water to remove water from the equation as a variable. I took my thermometer and my own timer. I got the timer recently from an electronics store here in Australia and it talks to me each minute. Very handy when doing multiple tubes at different times.

I mixed my first batch of D76 and did a test neg with my film and -- disaster -- thin flat and thousands of miles from home. My first thought was faulty film. A day of trauma passed and I tried a second sheet but this time with rodinal and bingo all is well. For some reason the D76 was no good freshly mixed. I mixed a second batch and it was fine, so much so that I continued to use and trust it.

Part of my time in the Yosemite area was directed towards explaining to a friend of mine the testing methods of BTZS, but like a lot of American darkrooms his has a cold light head enlarger and was not really very consistent for film testing. He certainly acknowledged the wealth of data we get from our 5 sheets of film and is certainly looking favourably in our direction. I suggested he look on line for a cheap condensor enlarger to just set up for testing.

BTZS was a great success for me and while I didn't meter every scene totally correctly all of my negs reveal a very printable image.

I was really pleased to be able to talk on the phone to Phil and also chat to Dennis from the View Camera Store. Jorge and I had at least 2 conversations on the phone over the 3 and a bit weeks so I feel I have had an excellent opportunity to get to know the people of BTZS just that bit better.

Steve
