John --
Converted spotmeters are obviously not laboratory-grade instruments but, if carefully constructed, they're accurate enough for our purposes. They're least accurate when reading high reflection densities because some unavoidable flare light dilutes the readings. The good news is that flare reduces Dmax and DR——neither of which is important for BTZS purposes——but has very little affect on ES, which we DO care about.
Your Dmax reading (1.8) is not unusually low for these homemade instruments (a "real" densitometer will typically read a couple of points higher) and I think running the spotmeter numbers through the Plotter will provide useful ES values. |
