Larry, A white fence against a dark barn should already be a pretty punchy subject. In such circumstances what is the effect of using an unsharp mask? Do you get a hyper-real or 3D effect?
Users of unsharp masks talk about edge effects. I am not sure what "edge effects" are. If you look under magnification at the edges in two prints from the same negative, one made with and one made without an unsharp mask, what do you see?
How much of the perceived benefits of unsharp masking have to do simply with printing the mask-negative sandwich at a higher contrast grade? With BTZS, it would be easy to set a target ES of .7 if that turns out to be desirable. |
