As I noted earlier, any accomplished BTZSer or Zone System worker could make all his negatives to print on a grade 4 paper; so the unique benefits of unsharp masking must relate to the edge effects. But what are these edge effects, exactly? Is it increased contrast at edges? Is it s sort of halo from the mask?
I guess what I am looking for is a nice, dry, scientific explanation of exactly what unsharp masking does. Can the effect be demonstrated or illustrated by means of sensitometry? |
