Dont obsses over the exposure method, the most important part of this exposure is what Phil mentions and that is that you are left with a strip that has only the last 2 or 3 steps blank so that you dont cut off the shoulder or the toe.
Miles is correct, when I started testing the first thing I did was calibrate my method so that I got the same results as one of Phil's tests. In my case it was Xtol with Tmx 400. If you are using a film that Phil has in the data base, the best thing you can do is calibrate and note the exposure that gives you results similar to Phil's...after that you are home free..
