I have looked inside a large softbox and found they use what looks like white ripstop nylon in two layers. The outer layer and a second layer a 6 to 12 inches deeper inside the box. With a smaller box you may not need the extra layers, but its something to check.
My only concern is the aging of the flash tube and the possible reduced output over time. I suppose you could check it with a flash meter and adjust.
You may need to use a higher end flash unit that allows you to adjust it's output in fine amounts.
Just some thoughts, you probably do not need a lot of power to expose, but you need it evenly illuminated and consistant.
