4x5 is perfect for learning pt/pd. You can try many things and papers without much expense. If you do like the technique then you can get a bigger camera if you dont then at least you are not out a lot of money.
The key to pt/pd is humidity of the paper, getting a good paper and patience, it will take a while before you start getting outstanding prints, but once you do, nothing compares..
