adjusting ES for staining developers |

I recently read the article in View Camera Magazine about staining developers and found myself being compelled to look a little closer. My total experience with "pyro" was a few rolls of 120 film in PMK with ok results. I was delivered some Prescysol(speculation is simular to Pyrocat-Hd). I decided to do a 5 sheet test with prescysol with 100Tmax and 400Tmax done in BTZS tubes. The films were read with a Mantis densitomer wih its blue LED light source. My test showed 100Tmax only rated at 50 EFS@ G 50. I loaded the results to the palmPDA and went out and did a field test(4 shots with 100Tmax) of a white church surrounded by trees with the sun at 6pm. I printed on Zone VI fb multigrade paper. My Palm ES was set at 1.05. The prints looked quite good( very good accutance, good shadow detail, great high lights with nice contrast and very nice overall gradation). However, I had to print with the 45AHead set to give a nominal paper grade 4.2 to get that result. I would like to do a side by side comparison with 100Tmax in my standard DDX 1+6 and in Pyrocat-MC(supposedly better for tube processing). Knowing ahead of time that the stained negative will need a more contrasty paper grade because of the stain color I am wondering if I could simply increase the ES setting on the Palm to compensate for that effect in order to arrive at stained negatives that would print on the same nominal grade of paper as the unstained negative? I am thinking this would allow for more direct comparision of the 100Tmax shots of the same scene/light/time,etc and printed on the same paper/grade (of course using their respective data curves). BTW the 400Tmax in my test only rated at 280 @ G50. I read that the Pyrocat has a bit higher EFS for both films??? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. |
