Don --

The 4th edition corrects a few typos and makes a few other minor adjustments, then includes a new chapter on gradation. I think this is an important subject but it has little to do with testing or metering. If testing is your primary interest the 3rd edition should be adequate.

Determination of ES relies on the paper curve limits (0.04 over B+F, and 90% of Dmax) established by ANSI/ISO. These are arbitrary limits that are valuable mainly because they provide a universal standard. They may or may not satisfy all photographers, or apply satisfactorily to all printing materials, especially alternative processes. They're good values to start with, however, and they're the default values included in the Plotter so I recommend using them.

Tube or drum film processing is preferable to tray processing in several ways. I'd suggest saving the trays for print processing.
