There are definitely many challenges in calibrating pyro staining negatives to BTZS work, especially for variable contrast silver papers.
With Amidol I have found the results using stained negatives to be a very reliable indicator of effective printing density if the reading is taken in Blue with a multi-channel color densitometer.
And the results with stained negatives are even more consistent with alternative processes if the plotting is based on a densitometer reading in UV mode.
As for whether stained negatives are worth the trouble people obviously disagree, but if everyone thought alike the world would be a very differnt place.
