For 35mm? Negatives should be developed to a fairly low contrast, and printed on grade 3, not grade 2, as 'normal'. This was established eons ago, in the days of B&W motion picture work. It helps reduce graininess and preserve sharpness.
35mm film should always be processed to the same contrast, about CI of 0.35-4.0.
