I've been using an EG&G sensitometer for testing and it uses an electronic flash to exposet the film. Unfortunately the sensitometer does not belong to me and I have use of it only temporarily. The unit is set up with ND filters to yield the needed exposure for film with ab ISO of 100 or 400.
Since the sensitometer isn't mine and I can't locate an EG&G unit I was thinking exactly the same thing that Jorge mentioned - using an electronic flash. I spoke to the person that owns the sensitometer and mentioned the idea to him. I told him it seemed to me that someone would have thought of the flash solution already. His reply is that the output of the sensitometer is carefully controlled by special electonic control circuitry to yield repeatable results and that a standard electronic flash wouldn't be a reliable light source.
So I've not gone any further with the idea but would like to since I think the chances of finding an EG&G sensitometer is very slim.
