finding IDmax

Maybe a silly question, but here goes. IDmax, according to the book (p.45) is 90% of the difference between B+F and max black (Dmax). On page 36, however, it appears to be defined as 90% of Dmax. The latter definition is consistent with other sources (e.g., Stroebel et al., 1986, Photographic Materials and Processes), and gives a larger ES. Which one to use??? Is there a theoretical/practical reason to favor one over the other? I sometimes get stuck in the weeds
