Determining push processing development times |

I shoot both large format and small format. A lot of my small format work is in existing light where pushing the film is common. How does one go about figuring out the correct development time? The best I can figure is to shoot a gray card and expose for the desired film speed. Then find the development time that will produce the correct density. Is this the correct approach?
