Thanks, Phil. I will stay away from any such "improvements" that complicate a pretty simple process and introduce their own set of drawbacks.
The fact that no one has reported having scratched the negatives from tugging them out of the tubes suggests that I did not scratch my film at this stage. That's the good news. The bad news is that I now have no idea how I could have scratched the film backs. It is rather disheartening, after having successfully developed so many negatives, to have such a basic problem cropping up now.
