"could the film have been scratched in the loading into the holders?"
I don't think that is likely. I am wondering if I was somehow careless in removing the exposed film from the holders. If I held the film by opposite edges perhaps the bowed middle section came in contact with the edge of the holder. However, I don't remember doing this.
"are there any visible areas or palpable areas on the inside of the tubes?"
I did check this. There are not.
"were the scratches in the same location on each negative?"
They were all in the middle of the back, but the number of scratches varied in number, length and exact location.

I have not done this yet, but I will.

Yes, I will certainly do this, and I will be doubly careful.
i don't think keeping fluid in the tubes makes any difference. by the way, were the scratches on the emulsion side of the film or non-emulsion side?
The scratches were all on the film backs or non-emulsion sides.
