Jon --
It's probably overkill to worry about providing a specific spectrum for B&W negative density readings. The industry standard is simply "visual" which is essentially ordinary "white" light. We've had useful results with several different types of densitometers, some of which are "orthochromatiic" (minimal red component) and some homemade desitometers using CdS cells that were predominately red and IR sensitive. So it's possible to work effectively in B&W with almost any reasonable neutral light color.
For best results it's probably best to try to match the spectral sensitivity of the printing paper — mostly blue and UV for graded papers, extending into the green for VC papers. But the most important thing (in my opinion) is repeatabiity and consistency. I'd suggest approximating "visual" white and going with it. |
