		| The MPE serves in the Zone System as a sort of rudimentary densitometer that standardizes procedure enough to make zone gray comparisons more or less meaningful. It has no purpose in BTZS; although it's nice to have negatives that print at a more or less consistent exposure I think it's more important to print for best image quality rather than worrying about the actual exposure time. 
 No, I wouldn't consider the MPE a useful test of negative quality. It's harmless enough as a rough check, but I wouldn't consider a negative that failed that test a total failure if it produced a fine print.
