I agree with using the the reading you get with aiming the dome of the incident meter towards the camera lens as the Hi value and then to get the Lo reading shading the dome partially with something (hand or card) while closely observing the shading of the dome. When the shading approximates what you perceive as equivalent to the shadowed value in the scene use that e.v. as the Lo value. Even the most flat scenes in nature will have quite discernible Hi - Lo values... in fact I just came in from a forage in the woods on a very overcast day with light drizzle using this technique ... I take a card that has Black on one side and white on the other side to use as a visual aid to finding the values that i will need ... The 4X5 negs are hanging and so far they look great... I think the incident system works better for these scenes than the zone system ... on caution would be to be careful not to force find the very blackish value or you'll ed up with overly contrasty negatives and no open detailed shadows... |
