Exactly my question! However, I am finding that contact printing will often require a different ES from the same paper used for projection printing. Some of my BTZS curves matched to a paper ES of 1.0 are clearly to thin to be used in contact printing. The distance from the negative to the paper and light source must play a role. Fred Newman ( who, as you know, worked with Phil Davis for a long while ) is doing some paper testing over the next few weeks, and will be comparing the ES of many newer black and white printing papers in various developers for both contact and projection printing. In his book Phil does mention that paper testing should be done using the exact method that one is to use, e.g., either contact or projection printing.
