I just conducted my first paper test. The result was a bit surprising to me and I'd be interested to hear others' comments.
The materials and test conditions were as follows: Ilford Multigrade IV FB, Ilford #2.5 contrast filter, Dektol, Stouffer step tablet projected onto 7" x 8-3/4" print area. The enlarger lens is a 40 yr old Componon which is a little fogged around the outer diameter. I exposed the paper for 15 sec at f/16. (When I stop down to f/16 you can't see the fogged portion of the lens.)
I exposed four sheets and developed for 1, 2, 3, and 4 minutes. The paper was underdeveloped at 1 min, but at 2 minutes and above Dmax came out 2.01 above base+fog. (Paper white came out 0.00 after I nulled the instrument on the whitest paper I could find.) The densitometer is an X-Rite 320. Could be a touch out of calibration, but should be pretty darn close to dead on. I used some old Kodak standards to calibrate it.
The results were the same for all three sheets of fully developed paper: SI = 0.73. If I understand the figure on p.89 of BTZS, 4th ed., that's a grade 4. Any thoughts on why the paper/filter combo came out a 4 instead of 2.5?
Thanks, Chris
