Here in my Australian summer I find that if I want shadow and highlight detail I have in excess of a 10 stop sbr most of the time in the full summer period. I would imagine that the desert areas of America would be similar. I shot in the death valley area and before learning and adopting BTZS had to get on my hands and knees to measure "shadow details" with a spot meter in cracks or under rocks etc.

The only way to combat the harsh - overly contrasty - light range for me here in Australia is to shoot at a different time of day.

BTZS has allowed me to see in a very real sense from the graphs in WinPlotter what the film/developer combination can actually handle -- no more no less. It really is the only exposure sysem.
