Ok, after reading the BTZS with a new "open" mind....On the section of G bar and picking EFS. The way this is described in the book I should pick my Dmax by choosing the ES (or SI) that will accomodate the tones. So in my case, using pd/pt, I would choose a ES of 1.6 as opposed to the 1.05 normally used for silver printing. If I understand correctly this links my negative densities to a paper reproduction scale.
Now in the ZS this is never "explained" quite clearly, and it is "knowledge" gained by experience and getting tired of burning and dodging. In my case I printed a step wedge to obtain the same zone V value in all contrasts (I never liked that minimum time for maximum black, it did not make sense to me and it does not take into a account paper contrast).
It seems to me the BTZS method is just too easy, I must be misunderstanding something here.
