Does this make me a heretic?

I am planning to do a quasi-zone test of a DSLR to determine my personal dynamic range of the thing. Exposing on a card I intend to bracket about 5 stops up and 5 stops down and then read the resulting 'digital densities'. I figure that if I obtain this information I can still use the incident metering system to best place my exposure within that range in varing lighting conditions.

I realise that I shall not have the benefit of expanding or contracting development in the usual way, but I do feel the exercise will provide valuable information.

Not that this will be a passion for me - simply commercial expediancy.

Any comments or advise will be warmly received.

Cheerio,
