Change in Kodak Dektol formulation?
Bill Waldron  19:10 1 Jul 04
Mixing fresh print Dektol developer in the middle of a recent printing session, I noticed, quite by accident, that paper base white in a print from the "new" developer, when put on the viewing stand next to a print from the old developer, was visibly yellowed. I was printing on Kodak Polymax Fine Art fiber-base paper and made no change in any variable other than the developer solution. The new developer was mixed from a fresh package of powdered Dektol, which now comes in a plasticized bag (the old product comes in a paper bag with foil liner.) I discarded the new solution, mixed new stop bath and fixer, ran the print through the new chemistry...and still had a mildly yellowed print. I post this note as both an inquiry (has anyone else noticed this change?) and a warning...it is possible that the "new" Dektol requires a different developing time than the old. I intend to run a few basic test this weekend, with both old and new formulations, to learn more. So far, all I have to go on are some suspicious entries on the packages - the old recommends a useful development range of 1-3 mintues the new, from 3/4 to 4 mins.
