Ross -
I've gone through this process in the last few years and have settled on the following with great results:
- Mac G4 1.25Ghz with 2GB RAM and LOTS of drive space - Photoshop for image processing. I use several plug-ins and typically have been scanning chromes and converting them with filters to B/W films of my choice. I also shoot Fuji B/W Acros. - Epson 7600 printer with ultrachrome inks and various papers. - ImagePrint RIP (vital) - 2 17" displays from Apple with a spyder for screen calibration. - I have two scanners - one from Linocolor/Heidelberg and Howtek. One is a flatbed and the other a drum. I use Silverfast for scanning.
If you want to save some money, don't buy a scanner. Buy drum scans locally and use a cheap flatbed for contact print use. I learned this the hard way.
