It's been my experience (with type 55) that the image always develops to completion (like paper) and that waiting a bit longer just turns the developer to glue.
There was a pretty good article on using type 55 a few year back in View Camera. You could get some tips there if you can get a hold of it.
It's also been my experience that the prints that type 55 produces are the nicest B&W polaroid prints. The negatives aren't bad either, but you have to shoot them at a slightly different speed to get a good negative.
