Plagued by doubts...that's me. I got in trouble in Sunday School a lot for that reason.
I see what you're saying though about the shadow densities. I just realized, for example, that Ilford's film speeds (for roll film anyway) are such that the shadow densities fall into the 0.70 range, which pushes the highlights way "high" compared to what I'm used to. But it doesn't really matter, because the difference between high and low is what's important.
I will try that feature in the Plotter that you mentioned.
