Trig: Not sure of your meter, but if ambient mode means available light, I see no problem provided it can read incident light. Just measure the subject hi EV value and subtract the subject low EV value. The chosen low value should be in a subject area that you want to have adequate shadow detail. The hi- the low == the subject SBR.
