I wouldn't necessarily advise people to meter through the filter for a couple of reasons, mostly notably that your meter doesn't see color the same way your film does and this can lead to a incorrect exposure.

My meter is a modified Pentax digital spot which has had internal component that have been added and upgraded so that it "sees" light more like Tri-x does, or so the theory goes.

Phil always questioned my doing this with good reason. However for me and with this special meter, it works (even though I don't shoot Tri-x). If you try this with an unmodified meter it is highly likely that you will get a incorrect exposure. This is why filter factors exist, because you can't generally do this.

That said, even filter factors are a generalization and it is why ExpoDev allows you to create your own so you can create different factors for different lighting situations.
