Phil, I do share in principle all of your observations. I learned to do dye transfer prints just as kodak stopped producing most of the materials to produce what I believed were the most beautiful prints one could produce. It was quite labor and material intensive but it was always a labor of love. I can and have produced meaningful digital prints. I believe that from a cost only point of view the best quality digital cameras. scanners and printers are still a bit too costly for me. I am aware of hybrid systems that could bring that cost down. Personally I still get the greatest personal satisfaction setting up my wooden tripod, 4X5 camera, and eventually escaping for a few hours in the solitude of the darkroom. I love fine silver prints but I suppose for me I have come to love the process. May someone always produce some silver based film and paper for the forseable future!!!!! |
